摘要:
The microstructure ofcrystalline materials is defined by the type, proportions and morphologies ofphases; it significantly determines the materials' mechanical and physicalproperties. Metallic alloys of completely different composition may exhibit similarproperties if their microstructures are similar. An example of this are Ni, Coand Pt alloys with their cuboid precipitates. In general, material propertiescan be tailored if the formation of phases during phase transformations andtheir morphologies are known and controllable.
Phase transformations usually result froma change in the temperature, pressure or concentration. Often well-definedthermodynamic states (and their transitions into each other) are studied, avoiding the simultaneous presence of multiple states. In temperaturegradients, however, multiple states are obtained simultaneously in a sample andcan be analyzed. For example, it is possible to observe the melting process intemperature gradients using the spatial distribution of temperature (instead ofthe temporal evolution).
In the lecture, it will be demonstratedhow non-equilibrium microstructures can be specifically adjusted andcharacterized with the help of temperature gradients. Combining experimentswith simulations and/or thermodynamic equilibrium calculations offering newapproaches to quantities that are extremely difficult to access, such astime-resolved nucleation rates, solid/liquid interfacial energies ortemperature dependent thermal properties.
